To vest or not to vest….
The vest is one of this season’s most popular styles. I have to admit that this is a piece I haven’t had in my wardrobe previously. Often, we see trends swing in and out of style every few years. Sometimes with a new twist. The vest, however, while it has peaked its head around the corner a few times is now front and center and making its mark.
Like so many other pieces, the vest is appearing in a large assortment of style, fabrics and colors. What style should you purchase if you want to add this piece to your wardrobe? The answer hinges on what style will flatter you best. With so many choices it can be hard to know which cut is best for you.
Start with what looks good on your body and then think about what will compliment your existing wardrobe. The tailored vest is a great standalone piece - no tank or t-shirt needed. The oversized vest works best when it’s layered over another piece. Either of these vests often work well with a matching bottom. In particular, the tailored vest with a matching pant in the same color and fabric can create a polished look. However, if you are looking for something more casual, an oversized vest is a great layering piece over jeans and a tank or shorts and a t-shirt.
You have plenty of choices in fabric and silhouette. For a more elegant look, a linen vest would be a great choice for summer. For something a little more edgy, try a denim vest. The best cut will depend on your body type. A traditional v-neck vest flatters most body types. However, halter and square neck style are popular options as well.
As with any summer outfit, find what you love and go with it. Building your wardrobe is about adding pieces that make you feel good. Never feel pressure to buy something you don’t love. Always find the trends that work best for you!
*Pictured here are a few styles I have tried on to showcase some variety in this one trend. The necklines and buttons can make a difference as you can see. The best neckline for you will be a personal choice based on your body type. I personally prefer the v-neck and soft angle square neck line. These options are more tailored and do not require any under t-shirt or tank.
